Favourite Passage Snacks to Make at Sea

Favourite Passage Snacks to Make at Sea

When you're on passage, it can get very boring, and we’ve found that food becomes one of the main highlights of the day. And there are definitely a few passage snacks to make at sea that everyone particularly loves… here they are!

#1 Bean Burritos

An all-time favourite that kind of requires a stop near Central/South America to stock up on refried beans, this is a delicious way to keep spirits high out here.

Basic Recipe (x12):

Ingredients:

- 12 wraps/tacos

- 1–2 packets of refried beans

- 1/2 cup jalapeños

- 1/2 head of lettuce

- 1/2 cup grated cheese

- Mayonnaise (topping)

Instructions:
- Lay out all of your wraps.
- First, squeeze some suspicious-looking refried beans onto each wrap. Then add some lettuce leaves.
- Next, pop some jalapeños on them — seriously a must, they make it.
- Following the jalapeños, sprinkle some cheese on and add a squeeze of mayonnaise…
- Voila! Bean burritos to make the crew happy!

#2 Tuna & Cheese Crackers

These passage snacks to make at sea are in no particular order, just so you know, but these are very delicious. Pretty much a glorified cheese and crackers — you don’t need a recipe for them…

Just grab a pack of crackers (Ritz are hard to beat), a tin of tuna, some cheddar cheese, and jalapeños to top it off — then whack it on the crackers and shove ’em in your mouth!

#3 Choc-Peanut-Banana Smoothies

Sometimes we make it as a light breakfast, sometimes it’s a midday pick-me-up, but these banana smoothies are a very common occurrence onboard. And everyone loves them, so whoever makes the call to whip them up suddenly has to make six… perks of a big family, I guess.

If you're keen on seeing the recipe for these fantasised choc-peanut-banana smoothies, head over and find it here: The Choc-Peanut-Banana Smoothie Recipe (You’ll Never Look Back).

#4 Veggie Sticks

I know it might seem a little hopeful to think you’ll have enough veggies to make veggie sticks as a snack… but I’m always surprised at how we manage to make our fresh produce last. So, on the odd occasion, we get the treat of eating some veggie sticks!

Our favourite veggies to use would be carrots, capsicum, and cucumber. Usually, we throw in some cheese and crackers as well (not vegetables, I know).

#5 Hard-Boiled Eggs

Well, have you ever heard of a more well-known snack? I mean, they sell hard-boiled eggs on the streets of Colombia! It’s probably one of the most common yet underrated passage snacks to make at sea, and that’s why it’s here.

Hard-boiled eggs are eaten a lot of ways onboard Happy Days: halved with some salt and pepper, mashed on sourdough, or thrown in a wrap with some lettuce and mayo. Whichever we choose on the day, hard-boiled eggs rarely disappoint.

We always make sure to buy at least five trays of the things before going on any lengthy passages.

Summary

So, there are our favourite passage snacks to make at sea! I really hope they’ve given you some good ideas and a feel for what we enjoy making when the days pretty much revolve around food.

At sea, your food options can be pretty limited, but we’ve figured out how to make the most of it. I know I mentioned fresh ingredients in almost all of these snack suggestions, so it’s only fair I throw in a link to our passage provisioning guide here, so you know what to get when stocking up for a long passage (and so you can make all of these snacks!).

Can’t wait to hear any suggestions you have and what you think of these recipes — catch you in the comments!
